The ATC is a collaborative of the training/education committees of the archival organizations from the three participating states who offer affordable archival training opportunities for staff and volunteers in historical repositories of all sizes in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and also for any neighbors who want to attend. The ATC grew out of an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)-funded grant initiative to establish a sustainable training program inthe Mid-Gulf States.
The ATC can offer training programs tailored to local needs and conditions by using the growing number of free Web-based educational materials available. Each training session brings local practitioners together with an experienced professional to work through the Web-based materials in groups. The professional, "TheMentor in the Room," answers questions, clarifies concepts, and generally offers guidance and support as the participants work through online units. Ideally, no participant will need to travel more than an hour from home, so the mentor and classmates can become a supportive local network.
The Archival Training Collaborative serves the tri-state area of Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi in providing inexpensive and accessible workshops for the management and preservation of historical materials. The ATC recruits qualified archival professionals to provide workshop participants with effective opportunities for continuing education, mentorship, and collaboration. The ATC advocates for increasing the skills and competencies among our participants in order to ensure adequate and effective management of historical materials, and in effect, the collective memory of our communities.
